An invitation to engage in the discussion and exchange information by subscribing to the Rule of Law listserve (lacba_rule-of-law@forums.lacba.org).

Dear LACBA Members –

There has been much discussion lately on LACBA’s various section listserves about recent events as they relate to the rule of law, and the role of courts, judges, lawyers and law firms. These are important conversations, and these are extraordinary times. Indeed, on March 10, 2025, LACBA’s Executive Committee issued a public statement condemning recent attacks on the rule of law and the independence of the judiciary and legal profession. Since then, LACBA has joined similar statements issued by coalitions of bar associations from throughout the country, including the NYC Bar Association and the ABA. As specified in LACBA’s statement, defense of the rule of law should not be a partisan or political issue. 

Some members have welcomed and wholeheartedly engaged in these discussions. Others have expressed a desire to relegate these discussions to a separate forum to not interfere with the usual business of section listserves. And yet others have opposed any such discussion in the context of LACBA because they view them as political. 

In recognition of and respect for the varying positions of our members, LACBA has set up a special listserve dedicated to the above-referenced topics. We ask that members who wish to engage in these discussions and exchange relevant information to subscribe at lacba.org. It is our hope that these discussions will be confined to this special listserve going forward.

We ask that all members honor LACBA’s general listserve guidelines and code of civility guidelines.

I hope that many of you will join the special listserve and engage in robust and meaningful discussions of these important issues in the finest traditions of our democracy.
