Jonathan B. Cole
Partner, Mentor, Friend, Champion

It is with profound sadness that Nemecek & Cole announces the passing of Jonathan B. Cole — founding partner, trusted colleague, and dear friend.

Jon co-founded Nemecek & Cole in 1984 and over the decades built the practice into one of Southern California's preeminent professional liability and business litigation firms. Jon was an icon and a titan in the legal community — the attorney colleagues and clients turned first when the stakes were at their highest. Fierce, relentless, and brilliantly skilled, Jon was equally known for the compassion and humor he brought to his advocacy. In addition to countless accolades, Jon was recognized as a Top 100 Lawyer in Southern California. His reputation for excellence was unparalleled, and his legacy is written into the law itself: he was responsible for more than 40 published decisions, creating lasting authority governing professional liability in the State of California as well other landmark appellate victories. His expertise, masterful writing and unmatched courtroom presence shined during his 2005 landmark First Amendment case before the United States Supreme Court.

Jon’s legacy continues through the legions of skilled litigators who were shaped by his mentorship. He never wavered in his attention to detail and expectation of same — instilling in every attorney who learned from him the conviction that outstanding results and uncompromising ethics are not in tension, but inseparable. He also served as the foundation of a firm culture built on family, respect, inclusiveness and community. Indeed, the firm’s recognition as one of the top places to work in the area was a testament to the values and dedication inspired by Jon.

Outside the courtroom, Jon was a legend in the world of competitive water skiing. A seven-time National Water Ski Racing Champion, he held the Catalina Water Ski Race record for men over 45 (set in 1996) and the Australia Bridge to Bridge record for men over 50. Much like his commitment to serving his clients, Jon brought the same drive, discipline, and unmistakable joy to everything he did, including his consummate athleticism.

Jon was larger than life. He attacked each moment with an indelible spirit and uninhibited enthusiasm that immediately captured all around him. He commanded every room and filled it with laughter and his persuasive charm. Jon approached every challenge as though it were his biggest and attacked with pragmatism, resolve, and an unyielding commitment to excellence. Those qualities made him not only a formidable advocate, but a trusted advisor and a steady, reassuring presence for clients and colleagues alike.

Jon was a longstanding and devoted member of several area Bar Associations, including the Los Angeles County Bar, generous with his time and insight, and deeply committed to the organization and its values. To so many of us, Jon was far more than a respected lawyer — he was a true and loyal friend. His loss will be profound. His legacy will endure.
