Introductory TAP


Designed specifically for attorneys who have little or no trial experience, this course provides introductory trial advocacy instruction, emphasizing participant mock trial performance and constructive feedback. Participants receive instruction on trial skills and perform several phases of a jury trial. Participants learn how to mark exhibits, lay evidentiary foundations, deliver opening statements, conduct witness direct and cross-exam, and deliver closing arguments. This 3-week course is taught 4 times a year, in January, March, May, and September. Weekday evenings from 6:00-8:30 p.m.

  • Introductory TAP provides introductory instruction on trial advocacy.
  • Participants learn, develop, and apply trial advocacy skills directly applicable to civil litigation, criminal prosecution, employment matters, criminal defense, and administrative hearings.
  • Participants receive instruction on, and perform, several key phases of a jury trial, including marking exhibits, laying evidentiary foundations, delivering opening statements, conducting direct and cross-examination of witnesses, and delivering closing arguments.
  • Participants try a mock trial.
  • Introductory TAP constitutes 15 hours of MCLE.

There are no prerequisites or interviews for course admission. Successful completion of this class meets the prerequisites for admission to our Traditional TAP course, taught bi-annually in the Spring and Fall. Due to the performance aspect of this course, each session is limited to 14 people per class.
