Outstanding Jurist Award
The Outstanding Jurist Award was established by the LACBA Board of Trustees in 1979 to recognize a judicial officer with a distinguished career on the bench. The Award may be given only once during each bar year (July 1 to June 30) and need not be given every bar year.
Award Criteria
In addition to a distinguished career on the bench, the judicial officer is also recognized for contributions to the community and the practice of law. Among the factors to be considered, include:
(1) judicial ability and experience;
(2) judicial temperament and demeanor;
(3) knowledge of the law, legal ability, and scholarship;
(4) dedication and diligence;
(5) contribution to the improvement or education of the legal community;
(6) contribution to the community at large;
(7) contribution to the practice of law; and/or
(8) judicial independence, integrity, and fairness.
Eligibility
Eligible judicial officers must have not previously received the Award and be either (1) a current state or federal judicial officer, or (2) an individual who occupied such a position at any time during the five-year period immediately prior to the Award Committee's first meeting.
